In June 2026, something rarely seen unfolded in the AI industry. Anthropic’s top-tier model, ‘Claude Fable 5,’ had its access blocked worldwide just three days after release. This was not a model-performance problem but the result of a US government export-control order.
What Happened
On June 9, Anthropic released Fable 5 and Mythos 5. They were introduced as the most powerful models available at the time, posting top-tier results on nearly every benchmark.
Three days later, on June 12, the US government issued an export-control order citing national security. The order was to block access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all ‘foreign nationals,’ without excepting those inside the United States. In line with the order, Anthropic cut off access for all customers.
Why the Government Blocked It
At the heart of it is cybersecurity capability — the concern that Fable 5 could be used for security-related work such as finding software vulnerabilities, and that there could be routes to circumvent (jailbreak) its safeguards.
Anthropic sees this as “a narrow-scope matter” and stated that it had not received concrete written grounds for the government’s claims. The company said it views the situation as a misunderstanding and is working to restore access.
Can You Use It Now?
As of June 22, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain suspended. No restoration schedule has appeared on Anthropic’s status page either.
That said, other Claude models — for example, Claude Opus 4.8 — can be used normally. It is a situation where only the two top-tier models are blocked.
What It Means for Us
This episode shows that the AI performance race is no longer a purely technical matter. The stronger a model gets, the more regulatory variables like cybersecurity and export controls come attached.
